How It Works

  • Group therapy helps you feel less alone

Part of the magic of group therapy is meeting a bunch of strangers and finding you have things in common. Lana's lyrics speak to deep emotional experiences, and when you share what you've been through, chances are it will resonate with another group member.

  • It's OK to be awkward

When we first meet, we're strangers. Luckily, we have one thing in common: we are all here for the first time, and literally all of us feel awkward! It's a bonding experience.

  • "Art is the lie that helps us realize the truth"

Sharing your thoughts on Lana del Rey's outfit choices might feel less vulnerable than sharing your emotions or traumatic personal experiences. And that's a good thing! In this group, we practice pendulating between intense experiences (self-disclosure) and less intense, safer experiences (talking about Lana's eye makeup)

  • Getting grounded

At group we have snacks, because eating together can be a good way to feel more comfortable with people. We encourage using fidgets or making crafts if that will help you stay present. And we start every session with a meditation so you can feel as grounded as possible.

  • Head and heart, micro and macro

In this group, we engage both our emotions AND our critical thinking. We discuss both our individual experiences and also the wider cultural context. All are essential for understanding complex topics.

  • Themes emerge

Some themes from previous groups: the performance of femininity, masochism, the appeal of dating "cool losers," teenage vs more mature sexuality, collaging one's aesthetic, white womanhood's relationship to Black masculinity, intergenerational differences, the American dream, etc...
